For Higher Education, Identity and Access Management (IAM) solutions automate the provisioning and de-provisioning process for identities within and between education communities. The benefits of IAM are far reaching, including institutional efficiency and effectiveness, reputation, competitiveness, system security, compliance and increased productivity.
I can think of three strategic and impactful reason why HE institutions need IAM:
- Data security breaches are serious– When data breaches occur, individual personal information is put at risk. For educational institutions, their reputations also suffer. Schools also face serious financial implications. According to a recent 2014 article published by Megan O’Neil in The Chronicle of Higher Education stated that the average cost for each individual record that is breach, costs the institution somewhere between $110 to $150. Expenses include individual credit monitoring, legal fees and costs associated with the use of IT forensic companies. Some universities suffered system data breaches that costed millions of dollars. IAM solutions play an integral role in meeting overall system security and institutional compliance.
- Performing repetitive tasks that can be automated is unproductive and wastes money– In a recent IT study, commissioned by Aegis Identity Software, Inc. showed that upwards of 65% of an HE institutions’s Help Desk time was spent resolving redundant password issues for students. In over 25% of the institutions who answered, Help desk staff dealt with these issues often or very often. An IAM solution with self-service password management capabilities would mitigate these issues.
- Inefficient/Manual provisioning & de-provisioning processes impact user experience & compliance-Today’s HE students and staff expect an experience which enables them to receive their user identity, establish a system password, claim their email accounts and have access to necessary applications and are continuous once matriculation starts. IT systems do not have automated provisioning and de-provisioning processes impact both the user experience and are subject to institutional audit and compliance issues. Automation through the use of an IAM solution enhances user experience and compliance.
While the strategic and impactful reasons for an IAM solution are evident, the task of implementing a solution is complex. The HE institution environment is unique with its turnover, multiple roles definitions, requirements and tight budgets. Finally, the size and the capabilities of the IT staff present challenges. The decision to “make” or “buy” often comes into play.
Aegis Identity Software, Inc. focuses 100% on the education and IAM market, we understand both the strategic drivers as well as complexities of IAM for HE institutions. Our enterprise IAM product, TridentHE has been designed specifically to address all of these issues.
