The Security Professionals Conference is always an exciting time for Aegis Identity Software, Inc.
For the last 3 years we’ve attended this conference we’ve seen a significant growth each year. Security is an ongoing issue for education institutions and the Security Professionals conference provides IT leaders with the tools, networking and education they need for a modern institution.
This year Aegis Identity sponsored the general session, “Everyone’s a target: How America Lost Control of the National Security Agency, and Can It Be Reined In?” The guest speaker was James Bamford, investigative reporter, best-selling author and expert on the National Security Agency. James formerly worked for the Navy and the NSA, he originally “blew the whistle” on the NSA breaking the law by doing surveillance on US citizens in the mid 70’s. Last summer he spent three days in Moscow interviewing Edward Snowden, who released top-secret NSA documents revealing illegal data collection on innocent Americans. He shared several documents that Snowden released; some of them showed illegal activity by the NSA while other documents showed background on NSA and other agencies like funding, bugging personal cell phones of allied leaders, secretly collecting everyone’s telephone data and much more.
How does this tie into identity and access management in education? We all have heard of stories like Snowden vs. NSA and quite frankly it’s an uncomfortable thought. As a society we feel as if we don’t have control over what information is being collected and what info is being used.
Your identity is essential and in today’s world it’s hard to know who is looking at your information. In education, we focus on the security of students, parents, teachers, professors, administrators and alumni. Having an identity and access management solution in an institution reduces and controls the data and information being shared. Based on roles and authority of each identity, your institution has the ability to control the environment. In a controlled and organized environment there is the ability to limit hacks or other parties looking and taking your data.
Everyday our Aegis Identity team listens and responds to the growing demand of security at educational institutions nationally and internationally. We understand the concern and our goal is to protect your identity. James brought a great presence to this general session and highlighted the ever-growing concern of security and your personal identity.
