Part One: The Foundation of Aegis Identity Software, Inc.
In my role I get a chance to talk to many professional marketers. These talented and creative individuals always give us much good advice. Recently I’ve been hearing about the concept of storytelling as a contemporary marketing “best practice.” What a concept for our High-Tech industry that usually uses “speeds & feeds,” datasheets, and PowerPoint slides. Who wouldn’t rather hear a story than decipher a datasheet? Here is my shot at the story of Aegis Identity Software.
The starting point of our story is people. Software = People. There are no factories, manufacturing processes, or vast physical assets that create a software company. It’s smart people with experience, talent and passion that come together to start a software company. Our people, many of them former Sun Microsystem employees, are all passionate about what technology brings to education. Many of us have participated in the market for years, if not decades.
Most of our people have lots of experience in Identity Management (IdM) Solutions deployed into the Higher Education market. Our primary expertise is in the former Sun Microsystems IdM product currently called Waveset. Many of us, myself included, formerly worked for Sun or a partner of Sun.
When Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems, they made the decision to decommission the Sun product in favor of their own Oracle Identity Manager product line, leaving many Sun Higher Education customers behind. This created a market need and left some really passionate and knowledgeable people on the sidelines.
This is how our story began. In 2011 these people who were passionate about the positive affect Educational Technology (#EdTech) has for our students and institutions decided to come together and start a new company; Aegis Identity Software, Inc.
